Happy Birthday Moe!
Moe Howard was born in Bath Beach, now called Bensonhurst, a Brooklyn suburb, on June 19 in 1897. Everyone knows Moe as a member of The Three Stooges.
What many don’t know is that his early acting was far from the slapstick comedy that would make him and his fellow Stooges so famous. Moe began his serious acting career on a Mississippi riverboat called the Sunflower and studied Shakespeare.
Next was time spent with the Marguerite Bryant Players in Pennsylvania where he honed his dramatic acting skills with more Shakespeare. Then it was back to New York where he, and his brother Shemp, became friends with Charles Ernest Lee Nash. , who would change his name to Ted Healy, where they hit the vaudeville circuit together.
Then it was off to Hollywood with Moe, along with Larry and Shemp, making their first film in 1930: Soup To Nuts with Fox Studios.
The rest, as they say, is history. Click here for Moe’s biography.
