To see how Larry, Moe and Curly dealt with Mother’s Day, check out the short All The World’s A Stooge from 1941 when Mrs. Bullion wants to adopt war refugees and ends up with The Three Stooges. There’s some great social satire in this short and the guys dressed as children is a stunning visual. 1942′s Sock A Bye Baby gives somewhat of a different spin on this theme as Larry, Moe and Curly have to take care of an abandoned baby. We get to see what is so easy for any Mom becomes so difficult for The Three Stooges!

Here’s some information about Mother’s Day that we thought was interesting and we hope you do, too. Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. A somewhat more contemporary ancestor would be England’s ‘Mothering Sunday’ which was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. During the 1600′s, young men and women who were servants and apprentices would return home on Mothering Sunday and bring their Mothers gifts and cakes.

The first Mother’s Day in the United States was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia, and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 10, 1908. Anna M. Jarvis is credited with beginning the Mother’s Day tradition in our country as the 1908 events came about after a two year letter-writing campaign to gain the support of influential ministers, businessmen and congressmen in declaring a national Mother’s Day holiday.

The House of Representatives in May, 1913, unanimously adopted a resolution requesting the President, his Cabinet, members of Congress, and all officials of the federal government to wear a white carnation on Mother’s Day. Congress passed another Joint Resolution May 8, 1914, designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. The U.S. flag is to be displayed on government buildings and at people’s homes “as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” President Woodrow Wilson issued the first proclamation making Mother’s Day an official national holiday.

Today, many countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day with many sharing with us the second Sunday in May for this very special day to celebrate a very special person. From all of us to all of you, Happy Mother’s Day.

Easter Sunday is March 31st and it is a holiday that has profound religious significance to many and is also celebrated at the secular level around the world.

Easter Sunday is March 31st and it is a holiday that has profound religious significance to many and is also celebrated at the secular level around the world. In fact, many of the non-religious traditions we incorporate today into the fun aspect of Easter came down through the centuries from many cultures and pre-Christian religious practices.

But we’re not going to give a history lesson. Instead we’ll give you some tips on how to dye Easter eggs using natural ingredients. Now that’s something right from The Three Stooges Problem Solving Manual: Use the tools at hand!

So, we begin. First, as Curly said ‘Separate Two Eggs’. Actually, put your eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add water to cover the eggs. Add a teaspoon of vinegar. Add the natural dye for the color you want (how to get the colors will follow) and bring the water to a boil. Then reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

Remove the ingredients you used to color the eggs. Remove the eggs from the pan and put them in a bowl. If you want a darker shade of the color, cover them with more of the natural dye or food coloring dye and let them stand overnight in the refrigerator.

HEALTH TIP: If you let eggs stand overnight only use them as decorations. DO NOT eat them.

Pale Red Fresh beets, cranberries or frozen raspberries
Orange Yellow onion skins
Light Yellow Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin
Yellow Ground tumeric
Pale Green Spinach leaves
Green-Gold Yellow Delicious apple peels
Blue Canned blueberries or red cabbage leaves
Beige to Brown Strong brewed coffee
Pink Cranberry juice or pickled beet juice
Lavender Grape juice

So now you can have an Easter Egg Roll just like the White House, a tradition that started during President Madison’s administration (1809-1817) and initially took place on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. It was suspended in 1876 and President Hayes restarted the practice in 1878 on the White House South Lawn.

As Moe would say ‘Get To Work’ as the Easter Bunny is on his way!

Spring time is a time of renewal. So here’s a way to renew your laughter and have some fun, too! Now that you set your clocks forward we suggest you start watching your Three Stooges videos to get ready for Spring, which actually begins on the 20th. Not only will you have fun as you watch the masters of mirth, merriment and mayhem, you’ll also get some practical tips you can use for traditional Springtime activities.

Get The Tools

In this case, get the golf clubs. Watching Three Little Beers is a two-for-one guide. You get tips from Larry, Moe & Curly about playing golf like no one has approached the game before – or since! – plus a lesson in sartorial splendor! The Boys are wearing the most, shall we say, ‘creative’ golf outfits we have ever seen.

Did You Know: This short marks the first credit listing for supporting player Bud Jamison who started working with Larry, Moe & Curly in Woman Haters, their first Columbia short.

Formal Attire & Etiquette

After a day on the links, perhaps there will be formal soiree at the club. So you’ll be hobnobbing with high society types. Check out Hoi Polloi. This short has the famous ‘One-two-three-dip’ dance lesson sequence that ends with the immortal ‘Now follow me closely and do exactly what I do’. Of course this after a bee flies down the instructor’s dress, resulting in the most hilarious dance sequence recorded on film.

Seeing Larry, Moe & Curly in tuxedoes is a treat, too, especially as they try to gracefully exit the party with their top hats and canes while the hoity-toity party guests engage in Stoogesque slapstick antics. A classic role reversal.

Did You Know: The theater One Sheets just listed the Stooges as Moe, Larry & Curly, omitting their last names. While only their 10th Columbia short, their popularity was so great the last names were not needed.

Spring Cleaning

Well, these days, spring cleaning also means some do-it-yourself work on the house. Who better than The Three Stooges to use as a guide as you paint, paper and plumb your way through the spring! Why, their methods may be a bit odd and the results sometimes even odder but you’ll Soitenly! get through the tasks with lots of laughs!

So start out with A Snitch In Time as Larry, Moe & Shemp show off their unique tool techniques with saws, planers, brushes, pliers, chisels, screwdrivers, hammers, assorted saws, and even glue. How silly does it get? Well, you know it’s pretty silly when Moe says ‘I’m helpless with these helpers!’ This one will A) Leave you in stitches B) Make you silly with laughter C) Glue you to the screen. You pick the pun! Why, you can even pick two! Nyuk! Nyukl! Nyuk!

Did You Know: Jean Willes, the damsel in the short, was married to pro football player Gerard Cowhig who played with the Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, the Cardinals started out in Chicago, then went to St. Louis (before the Rams) and then to Arizona.

Don’t Forget The Paint

Nobody paints like The Three Stooges. In Tassels In The Air they even get one of the foils in the piece to work on mixing up a batch of spotted paint! Larry, Moe & Curly cram a whole course in painting into this short’s 17 minutes. They brush up their skills on doors, chairs, tables and even a clock. Of course, mix The Three Stooges, paint cans and brushes and you know that eventually the paint ends up on The Boys!

No matter how much of a mess you might make on your painting chores around the house, you’ll look good compared to what the Stooges do and as a bonus, when you watch this short you even get a little pig Latin lesson, including this wonderful exchange: Curly: ‘I’m umb-day in pig language?’ Moe: You’re umb-day in any language!’

Did You Know: This was the first short were Moe pulled out some of Larry’s hair, a gag they would use often. Yes, through the years, Larry did actually lose some of his real hair during these scenes.

A Picture Worth A Thousand Words

When it comes to plumbing, do we really need to say more?

Did You Know: Bess Flowers, the lead lady in this famous short, appeared in more movies that won the Oscar (5) for Best Picture than anyone else. The five were Around The World In Eighty Days (1956); The Greatest Show On Earth (1952); All About Eve (1950); You Can’t Take It With You (1938), and It Happened One Night (1934).

So there you go. Some Springtime tips that cover working around the house, getting out for some exercise and doing a bit of socializing. So make sure you ‘get the tools’ before you tackle those household chores, ‘grab a bag of bats, slugger’, like Moe said to Curly before you hit the links and get the tux pressed before the party. If you need some help on that last bit, check out Sing A Song Of Six Pants. In fact you can preview that short right here.

Time To Watch

As for the rest, just watch the videos. Of course if you don’t have them in your library we can fix that, too, since all the shorts referenced here are at the ShopKnuckleheads Store in The Three Stooge DVD Collection. What a coincidence!

By The By: Just so you know, Daylight Saving Time (it really is Saving, not Savings) runs until November 3rd. Also, the Vernal Equinox, which is the official start of Spring, occurs this year on March 20th at 4:02 AM PDT.

Yes, we do know that the word ‘equinox’ comes from the Latin (real Latin, not the Pig version) meaning ‘equal night’ and refers to when the sun crosses the equator and at that time night and day are virtually of equal length. Hey, we may be members of the Amalgamated Association of Morons but we’re not idiots! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!

P.S. Just in case you forgot, the shot of Curly in the pipes comes from the short A Plumbing We Will Go, one of the very best.

Shemp’s birthday was listed as either March 4th or the 17th, depending on the source. The confusion came from an error made on his death certificate. The confusion was cleared up when Jill Howard, Shemp’s Granddaughter, located Shemp’s actual birth certificate and the date is actually March 11th.

Shemp was one of the original members of The Three Stooges. In 1932 he left and signed a deal with Vitaphone and made a series of shorts, aptly named the Shemp Howard Series. He also starred in the studio’s Joe Palooka series playing the boxer’s manager Knobby Walsh.

He also worked for Columbia and was under contract at the same time as The Three Stooges but he was cast in various other shorts, including the Andy Clyde series that was produced and directed by Jules White and Del Lord who made so many of The Three Stooges shorts.

During his years on his own, besides the various shorts series, he also had a very successful career in features and appeared in films for most of the major studios and worked with an array of other stars ranging from Abbott & Costello to Jimmy Stewart.

After Curly’s debilitating stroke in 1946, Shemp returned as a member of The Three Stooges and made 73 shorts and many TV guest appearances with Larry & Moe until his passing in 1955. Yes, the story is true: He passed away in a car on his way home from attending a boxing match in Los Angeles.

Some interesting Shemp moments:

Shemp, Curly & Moe appeared only once together on screen in the 1947 short Hold That Lion.

First of any member of The Three Stooges to marry. He wed Gertrude Frank on March 15, 1925.

He was in the first feature film, or film of any length, as a member of The Three Stooges along with Larry and Moe in the 1930 Fox film Soup To Nuts. He would not make another feature film with The Three Stooges until 1951 in the United Artist film Gold Raiders.

Shemp was in the only two Three Stooges shorts shot in 3D, Spooks! and Pardon My Backfire.

He was the only member of The Three Stooges to work with John Wayne. That’s a shot of Shemp with the Duke and Randolph Scott from the feature film Pittsburgh.

Shemp and Curly both portrayed prize fighters in a short. Yet it was Larry that had actually boxed professionally under the name of Kid Roth.

Just like all The Boys, Shemp was unique in his talents and a part of the lasting legacy of The Three Stooges.

Still need an idea for Valentine’s Day? Well, get some expert help from Larry, Moe & Curly.

If a romantic breakfast is how you plan to start Valentine’s Day, we have a suggestion for the menu. First, ‘separate two eggs’. No…wait…wrong holiday! Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!

Here are two recipes that look good to us, plus our suggestion as to which to use based on who will be doing the cooking.

Guys…If you’re cooking breakfast on Valentine’s Day for you and your Sweetheart, trust us…Bologna & Whipped Cream just won’t cut it! So try this:

Belgian Waffles with Cherry Sauce

Ingredients:

Cherry Sauce:
1/4 c Sugar
2 ts Cornstarch
1/8 ts Cinnamon
1/2 c Orange juice
2 c Sweet cherries, pitted and halved
1 ts Grated orange peel
Sweetened whipped cream
Waffles:
2 c Flour
2 tb Sugar
1 1/2 ts Baking powder
1/2 ts Salt
2 c Milk
1/2 c Melted butter/margarine
4 Egg separated

Preparation:
For Cherry Sauce: Combine sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon; add orange juice, cherries and orange peel. Bring to a boil over medium high heat; boil until thickened. Serve warm cherry sauce over waffles; top with sweetened whipped cream. For Waffles: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Combine milk, melted butter and egg yolks. Add to dry ingredients; stir just to moisten. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in waffle iron according to manufacturer’s directions. TIP: Belgian waffles can be made ahead and frozen in freezer proof plastic bags or aluminum foil. Toast frozen waffles in toaster oven or bake at 325 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

Ladies…A special breakfast for your special guy might be this dish:

Valentine’s Day Stuffed French Toast

Ingredients:
Breads, French, Breakfast
1 Loaf large diameter french bread
1/2 lb Breakfast sausage
1/2 Package bacon
1/2 c Milk
4 lg Eggs
1/4 c Sugar
1 ts Cinnamon
1 1/2 ts Vanilla
1/2 lb Boiled ham (thinly sliced)
1 Package American Cheese

Preparation:
In a large skillet fry the bacon and breakfast sausage, together but separately, until done. While the meat is cooking, slice the French bread into eight slices approximately 1 1/2″ to 2″ thick; then slice each slice 3/4 of the way through again. Mix the milk, eggs, sugar cinnamon and vanilla together into a batter in a deep bowl; set aside. Take up the bacon, sausage and ham and divide each into eight equal parts. Dip each piece of bread into the batter and submerge it so that both sides and edges are coated. Open each piece and put in one portion of the meat, bacon, and ham along with one slice of cheese and close the bread again. Fry the stuffed batter-coated bread slices in a lightly oiled skillet until golden brown on the outside and the cheese is melted on the inside. Serve two slices to a plate with your favorite garnishes and condiments.
